Confidence, Advocacy, and Finding Your Voice

March 3, 2026 468

Some leaders rise by climbing ladders.
Others rise by building something that didn’t exist — and inviting others up with them.

Patrice Thornton has spent her career doing exactly that. As the Founder and President of Human Resource Management Solutions (HRMS), Patrice built her business to meet a gap she saw firsthand: organizations that needed strong, informed HR leadership but not always on a full-time basis.

For Tiffany Odutoye, this conversation is deeply personal. Patrice is not just a peer in the HR world — she’s someone who has walked alongside Tiffany through many professional chapters. Listening to Patrice feels like sitting with a trusted guide who has done the work, learned the lessons, and is committed to pulling others forward with her.

Building Leadership from the Ground Up

Patrice founded HRMS with a clear mission: to support small and mid-sized organizations with human resource expertise, training, and leadership development. Her work spans day-to-day HR support, complex people challenges, and customized training for both private organizations and public-sector leaders.

One of Patrice’s greatest strengths lies in education — helping leaders understand not just policies and compliance, but the responsibility that comes with leading people. She has worked extensively with state and local government organizations, where size, structure, and long-standing systems can make change especially challenging.

What she’s learned is clear: organizations can adapt quickly — as seen during COVID-19 — but sustained change requires intentional leadership development and a culture willing to evolve.

Confidence, Courage, and the Power of Advocacy

A central theme in Patrice’s story is confidence — and how often women struggle to claim it, even when they’ve earned it.

She speaks candidly about how insecurity can quietly shape behavior in leadership roles: hesitating to advocate for others, not asking for resources, or minimizing one’s own value out of fear of losing ground. Patrice names what many women experience but rarely say out loud — and challenges it head-on.

Her message is both direct and compassionate: leadership requires confidence, and advocacy starts with advocating for yourself first. When women find their footing, they are better positioned to lift others — sending the elevator back down for the next generation.

Advice to Her 25-Year-Old Self

When asked what she would tell her younger self, Patrice doesn’t hesitate:

“Be confident. Be advocates for yourself first.”

It’s advice rooted in experience — and offered with the hope that the next generation of women leaders won’t wait as long to trust their voice.

Her Superhero

Rather than naming one single hero, Patrice’s inspiration is shaped by experience and perspective. Throughout her career, she has learned from many leaders, colleagues, and moments — each contributing something meaningful to her growth.

Her belief is simple but powerful: leadership lessons come from everywhere, if you’re willing to pay attention.

Why Patrice Thornton’s Story Matters

Patrice’s story is a reminder that leadership isn’t just about expertise — it’s about confidence, advocacy, and responsibility. It’s about recognizing when your voice matters, using it wisely, and helping others find theirs too.

Her work continues to shape leaders, organizations, and conversations — reminding us that when women rise with confidence, everyone benefits.
