Permission to Pivot: Flexibility, Resilience, and Leading Fearlessly

March 6, 2026 457

Some people plan their lives in five-year increments.
Others learn that the most meaningful growth happens when the plan changes.

Katie Winchenbach is a leader who embodies that second truth. A corporate attorney, nonprofit leader, podcast host, and reigning National United States Miss 2025, Katie’s path has been shaped not by rigid certainty—but by courage, curiosity, and a willingness to pivot when something no longer fit.

For Tiffany Odutoye, this conversation is both energizing and deeply affirming. Katie represents a new generation of women leaders who are redefining success—choosing flexibility over fear and impact over perfection.

A Journey That Didn’t Follow the Script

Katie grew up certain of one thing: she wanted to be a journalist. Writing camps, internships, tunnel vision—all signs pointed in that direction. But as graduation approached, she felt the unsettling realization that the path she’d been preparing for no longer felt right.

Rather than panic, she explored. A media law class sparked something unexpected, opening her eyes to how law intersects with business, creativity, and leadership. With no lawyers in her family and no clear roadmap, Katie chose curiosity over comfort—and enrolled in law school.

Her legal career began in a firm where she was both the youngest and the only woman attorney—an experience that sharpened her awareness quickly. When the environment didn’t support growth, she made a bold move: she left. Despite warnings that she was “ruining her career,” Katie advocated for herself and stepped into a startup role that valued her voice.

That decision became a turning point—not just professionally, but personally. It taught her to trust herself.

Leadership, Self-Advocacy, and Growth

Today, Katie works in-house at a Fortune 500 company where leadership development is not accidental—but intentional. She speaks openly about raising her hand early, seeking training proactively, and treating leadership as a skill to be learned—not a title bestowed.

Her experience highlights a critical truth: readiness doesn’t always come from experience alone. It comes from initiative, mentorship, sponsorship, and environments that nurture potential rather than gatekeep it.

Katie also uses her platform beyond corporate leadership. Through nonprofit work, pageantry, and her podcast Lead Fearlessly, she creates space for women to examine what leadership really looks like—especially when it doesn’t follow a straight line.

Permission to Pivot

A defining theme in Katie’s story is flexibility.

She shares how much pressure she once felt to make the “right” choice, fearing that one wrong decision could derail her entire life. Over time, she learned something freeing: pivots don’t mean failure. They mean growth.

Whether changing careers, going back to school for an MBA, or stepping into a public leadership role she never imagined for herself, Katie’s life proves that it’s never too late to course-correct—and that worrying less often opens more doors.

Advice to Her 25-Year-Old Self

Katie’s advice to her younger self is reflective and generous:

“Stop worrying so much. Be more flexible with your goals, be open to new opportunities, and don’t be afraid to pivot.
It is never too late to make a change.”

It’s wisdom earned through experience—and offered as reassurance to anyone standing at a crossroads.

Her Superhero: Her Mother, Janise

When asked to name her superhero, Katie doesn’t hesitate.

Her mother, Janise, battled cancer with unwavering positivity, resilience, and strength. Watching her navigate hardship with grace shaped Katie’s outlook on life and leadership in profound ways.

Through her mother, Katie learned the power of mindset—that while we can’t always control circumstances, we can choose how we meet them.

Book Recommendation

Katie is an avid reader who believes personal growth and leadership go hand in hand. Her recommendations include:

  • How to Do the Work — Dr. Nicole LePera
  • Books by Brené Brown
  • Collaborative Confidence — Dr. Heather Backstrom

Each reflects her belief that leadership starts internally and expands outward through connection and courage.

Why Katie Winchenbach’s Story Matters

Katie’s story is a reminder that leadership is not about rigid plans—it’s about trust. Trusting yourself. Trusting the process. And trusting that change, when embraced thoughtfully, can lead you exactly where you’re meant to be.

Her journey invites us all to worry less, stay open, and remember: the path doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful.
